School Name

It has come to my attention that Vail Ranch is thinking about renaming the school (not really, just for purposes of this blog). The two names they are thinking about are Abraham Lincoln Middle School and Robert E Lee Middle School. Write a proposal to the Principal explaining your thoughts. Make sure to back up your opinion with facts about these two men and why or why not the school should be named in their honor. Your comment should be at least one paragraph long.

  1. I believe that either way the school name would be honoring the man chosen. If it were General Robert E. Lee, it would be because he was a great general. Not only did he start under supplied, but out manned as well. Yet he unexpectedly lasted as long as he did. General Lee was aggressive, strategic, and he had the ability to inspire his soldiers. Also General Lee wasn’t afraid to take risks, and learn from his mistakes. General Robert E. Lee is a great person to represent our school name.
On the other hand, if Abraham Lincoln was chosen, it would be for his outstanding role as a leader in preserving the union during the Civil War. Also Lincoln started the Emancipation Proclamation that led to the end of slavery in the United States. Some of the main reasons Lincoln is remembered is for his character, honesty, humbleness, leadership, and speeches. Abraham Lincoln in my opinion is, and was an extraordinary man.
Whichever one is “chosen,” we should be proud, because both men were great leaders and cool dudes.

  2. Dear Mr. Groepper,
I would like u 2 consider naming our school Abraham Lincoln Middle School. He is a great example for the students @ VRMS and why not name our school after someone who could set a great example. For example, Abraham lincoln was called honest abe because he told the truth about cutting down his fathers cherry tree, even though he knew that his father would be very upset. VRMS wants to be known as an honest school,we also have a no cheating policy and want all our student to be proud about being honest. Another reason why we should pick Abraham lincoln as the name of our school, is that he abolished slavery. That is a good example to set for the students @ VRMS, considering we have a variety of ethnicities @ our school. If it wasnt for him we may not have the variety of students that we have today. Tell me what did Robert e. lee do that was as important as what abraham lincoln did. Some people call abraham lincoln the greatest president we evr had. I think that is the kind of model that we need for this school. :)

  4. I personally think our school name should be called Abraham Lincoln rather than Robert E. Lee. Lincoln successfully led the country through its great internal crisis. Robert E. Lee, however, though he was a brilliant general, betrayed the union. Robert E. Lee, to me was a weak man when it came to decisions. Even though he wished to be part of the union, he declined following his home state's (virginia) decision in secession and leading them. A strong person would choose to do what they believe in, instead Robert E. Lee turned to the CSA to make the people of virginia proud of him. Lincoln proudly showed and fought for what he believed in.

    LINCOLN ALL THE WAY! :D

  5. I did some research online and for the name to actually be changed is by calling a meeting with the governer himself and he has to sign a contract. Also, ALL staff members must vote in favor to change the name. If the governer does not attend the name does not change. And one other important reason is that in no way can it be changed because by law, two school's cannot be the same name. In which there is a Abraham Lincoln Middle School already and a Robert E. Lee Middle School as well. So speaking law that is why. My opinion (exluding the law stuff) on the name change would be no. Why name it after them? Why not name it Obama Middle School or George Bush Middle School? Yes even though Lee and Lincoln did change history, but Bush and Obama did too. Lee did go through the war outnumbered but we are playing an offensive war, the Iraq's are waiting (no point) and were kickin butt still, Bush did a good job by doing that, he made history too. And Lincoln had great speeches, well, so does obama. Ok im tired and im seriously considering the Nerf Battle. It would be awsome..

  6. Although personally i prefer Abe as a person (Didn't want expansion of slavery, stuck with union...well he was the prez but you get what i mean) , i prefer Robert E. Lee for a school. First off, it's funner to say (: , but in the important matters: Robbie (Robert+E) was an AHMAZING general. His plans were full of intelligence, motiviation, and passion, which is what school's want kids to have when it comes to there school work no? Robbie also had a drive to him. He didn't quit when the going got tough. And lets face it; the going gets tough ALL THE TIME in middle school. Tests projects, seemingly unfair teachers, "dumb" rules, there's always something to complain about. And sometimes, when it comes to grades, people DO quit. They quit trying. I think having such a great role model as a non-quitter for a school would be just what our school needs. To show kids, "Hey! You win some you lose some! Suck it up kid, and work so you can WIN instead of lose again." Robbie is a legend, anyone who's passed 8th grade history knows that, (Well not that they don't know abe ha)i'd much rather have my school named after an inspirational general than a street. Think about it. Vail Ranch. ... Now: Robert. E. Lee. Rolls of the tounge eh? :D And idk if this is more of a creative way of thinking, a smart way, or a stupid way, but Robert E. Lee left is plans right? For all to see? And then it totally bit him in the butt? Well idk how you see it, but i see it like leave your answers for all to see and it will totally come back and ruin it for you. A good story/message to tell before tests to prevent cheating (: Anywhoo, I just found out robbie's middle name was Edward. Idk if you told us that, but i thought it was interesting... (:

  7. I think that they were both great men...Lee's undying loyalty to his state, and his genius as a general--while Lincoln fought for keeping the Union together and also for the abolitionist cause. But even though these men great and significant figures in history, I beleive that our school should not be named after either one of them. I think this because, if you think about it, the name of our school has great importance as well. Vail Ranch, it commemorates the hard work of the cowboys who once lived here...if we changed this name, we would be erasing their memory...
