Election of 1860

Using your knowledge of the Constitution and the Causes of the Civil War analyze the map of the Election of 1860 (link). What states were the most populous? What states had slaves? Why do you think Lincoln was so popular? Did Lincoln win in any states that had slaves? Here is a link to a map of the Election of 2008, did those states that voted for Lincoln in 1860 vote for Obama in 2008? Why is this (or is this not) ironic?

  1. The top three are Ohio, PA, and NY. Basically, all the states that didn't vote for Lincoln, were slave states. I think he was popular, because he did something, took action--unlike Buchanan. In addition, he kept cool even in the face of adversity. But, Lincoln did not win any states that had slaves. Yes, the states that voted for Lincoln, voted for Obama. This is slightly ironic (but not with a negative connotation) because what they wanted back then, has become true--slavery abolished, and even more we have an African-American president! :-)

  2. I do not know what the most populous states at that time were but i do know that the five more populous states right now are: 1)California (YAY!) 2)Texas 3)New York 4)Flordia 5)Illinois. The slave states according to our book (After kansa-nebraska act) were texas, louisiana, arkansa, missouri, flordia, mississippi, tennesee, kentucky, georgia, south carolina, north carolina, virginia, maryland, delaware.I think that lincoln was popular because he was against the expansion of slavery. And there were more free states than slave states. And lincoln debated well (lincoln-douglass debate). And lincoln did not win any of the save states because the slave sates were afriad that if he won that he would ban slavery, even though he said that he wouldnt. The states that voted for lincoln in 1860 did vote for obama, that is ironic because i guess some of the states that felt that way in 1860 still fell that way not, they were anti-slavery, and now they are voting for an african americcna man 2 be president.

  3. Thanks for following. :D
The most populous states were New York, Pennsylvania, and Ohio. States that had slaves were, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Kentucky, Missouri, Tennessee, Arkansas, Alabama, Louisiana, Georgia, Texas, and Florida. Lincoln won no slave states. All of the states that voted for Lincoln voted for Obama as well. Maybe Obama and Lincoln share the same ideas, and that is why they both won the smae states. It is pretty paradoxical that Obama and Lincoln won the same states considering Obama is a Democrat and Lincoln is a Republican.

  4. New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Virginia were populous because they have the most electoral votes, and electoral votes depend on population. The slave states were Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, New Jersey, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Texas, Wisconsin. All of these states are listed in US government census as having held slaves between 1790 and 1860. Lincoln didn't win any states that had slaves. He didn't even appear on the ballots of ten southern states! The majority of the states that voted for Lincoln voted for Obama. I think this is ironic. First, they were both pretty popular among the people. They both ran for office during hard times, both are from Illinois. While Lincoln is President he is tried to abolish slavery, i believe they got the same votes cause the people thinks hes the next Lincoln saving America from debt. Obama also supports welfare. Lincoln and Obama broadly showed what they supported. Though they are similar, they were really different. They both came from different political parties. In my opinion, they both divided the country, but Obama is not like Lincoln whatsoever.

  5. The states that were most populous were California, Oregon, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. The states that had slavery were Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia. I think that Lincoln was so popular because he unified the North and the South, he also won the Civil War. He also was popular because he was facing one of the worst times in our country's history. Also he wasn't also against slavery, but he decided to do something about it facing one of the strongest opposition of history. To accomplish something that amazing he MUST be recognized for his goals and service he did for our country. Lincoln didn't win ANY states that had slaves in them. Yes, the states that voted for Lincoln voted for Obama. Some reason this was ironic was that both Lincoln and Obama were from Illinois. So with Obama from Illinois, people from states thought he would be like Lincoln, saving us from our current crisis. But so far Obama has done nothing to our country, and we won't know if he WILL take action. But in Lincolns perspective he took action right away because he CARED about people. So in my thoughts there is some things that Obama and Lincoln have in common but some of them are useless and people might have made a bad decision for our country. So to wrap up, Lincoln and Obama are nothing alike in political terms.
